ISCIENCES WORLDWIDE WATER WATCH LIST September 2024

This map presents a selection of regions likely to encounter significant water anomalies during the one year period beginning in June 2024 and running through May 2025 using 3 months of observed temperature and precipitation data and 9 months of forecast data.

The synopsis that follows provides highlights of regional water forecasts. Regional details are available in ISciences Global Water Monitor & Forecast Watch List September 15, 2024 (pdf).

United States: Extreme to exceptional surpluses are expected to persist throughout non-contiguous areas until February 2025.

Canada: Exceptional deficits will continue throughout the Prairie Provinces throughout May 2025 or longer.

Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean: The Yucatan Peninsula is expected to observe severe to extreme surpluses throughout May 2025 or longer.

South America: Exceptional deficits are anticipated to endure in regions of the Amazon Rainforest until November 2024.

Europe: Eastern Europe is expected to observe widespread severe to extreme deficits until February 2025.

Africa: Surpluses are expected to emerge across the Sahel throughout May 2025 or longer.  

Middle East: Central to southern regions of Saudi Arabia are expected to observe exceptional deficits throughout November 2024.  

Central Asia and Russia: Northern Kazakhstan and southwestern Russia will experience severe to extreme surpluses throughout May 2025 or longer.

South Asia: Severe to extreme surpluses are expected to continue throughout India throughout May 2025 or longer.

Southeast Asia and the Pacific: Portions of western and southern Myanmar will experience severe to extreme surpluses until November 2024.

East Asia: Exceptional deficits may endure throughout northwestern provinces of China until February 2025.

Australia & New Zealand: Severe to extreme surpluses are anticipated in northern Australia, which will also experience pockets of transitional conditions until November 2024.
