ISCIENCES WORLDWIDE WATER WATCH LIST December 2024

This map presents a selection of regions likely to encounter significant water anomalies during the one year period beginning in November 2024 and running through August 2025 using 3 months of observed temperature and precipitation data and 9 months of forecast data.

The synopsis that follows provides highlights of regional water forecasts. Regional details are available in ISciences Global Water Monitor & Forecast Watch List December 15, 2024 (pdf).

United States: Severe to exceptional deficits are expected to continue in midwestern and northeastern states until February 2025.

Canada: Pockets of extreme to exceptional deficits may remain in regions of the Prairie Provinces and central Canada until May 2025.

Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean: Moderate to extreme surpluses may endure in southern Mexico and Central America until May 2025.

South America: Deficits in the Amazon Rainforest are expected to continue until February 2025.

Europe: Some eastern European countries should anticipate extreme to exceptional deficits to persist until August 2025 or longer.

Africa: Surpluses are expected to continue along the Sahel until August 2025 or longer.

Middle East: Southern regions of the Middle East should expect exceptional deficits to continue until May 2025.

Central Asia and Russia: Areas east of Lake Baikal may experience exceptional deficits until August 2025 or longer.

South Asia: Widespread severe to extreme surpluses are expected to occur in most of India until May 2025.

Southeast Asia and the Pacific: Moderate to severe surpluses are expected to occur in various regions of Maritime Southeast Asia until February 2025.

East Asia: Widespread deficits are anticipated throughout the Yangtze River Basin until February 2025.

Australia & New Zealand: Some moderate surpluses will occur in northern Australia until August 2025 or longer.
