ISCIENCES WORLDWIDE WATER WATCH LIST January 2025

This map presents a selection of regions likely to encounter significant water anomalies during the one year period beginning in October 2024 and running through September 2025 using 3 months of observed temperature and precipitation data and 9 months of forecast data.

The synopsis that follows provides highlights of regional water forecasts. Regional details are available in ISciences Global Water Monitor & Forecast Watch List January 15, 2025 (pdf).

United States: Exceptional deficits are expected to continue in the Southwest until June 2025.

Canada: Portions of Central Canada and the Prairie Provinces are expected to endure exceptional deficits until June 2025.

Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean: Surpluses of severe to exceptional intensity are anticipated to remain in Central America until March 2025.

South America: Widespread deficits affecting the Amazon are expected to resolve in some areas, but may linger in pockets of central and eastern Brazil until March 2025.

Europe: Deficits of severe to exceptional intensity are expected to endure in some eastern European countries until September 2025 or longer.

Africa: Severe to exceptional surpluses will continue in the Sahel until September 2025 or longer.

Middle East: Coastal areas in Saudi Arabia and Yemen bordering the Red Sea may observe moderate to severe surpluses until March 2025 or longer.

Central Asia and Russia: Exceptional deficits will remain in western, northern, southeast, and northwestern Russia until March 2025.

South Asia: Much of India will observe widespread transitional conditions until March 2025, which will become moderate to severe surpluses until June 2025.

Southeast Asia and the Pacific: Several regions of Maritime Southeast Asia will endure moderate to severe surpluses until March 2025.

East Asia: Widespread exceptional deficits will continue in the Yangtze River Basin until March 2025.

Australia & New Zealand: Areas of northern Queensland may observe moderate to severe surpluses until September 2025 or longer.
