The forecast for November 2024 expects significant water deficits for the 12-month period of August 2024 through July 2025 in northern South America, Canada, northwestern and eastern China, and northern to central Africa. Areas expected to experience surplus include central Africa, South Asia, and Central America.

The forecast indicates that extreme to exceptional surpluses in northern Australia will diminish, though will still remain present in some regions of Northern Territory. Exceptional deficits across the continent will similarly dissipate, though severe deficits are expected along the southern coast of Victoria.

For the next several months, water deficits will diminish overall but intense deficits are forecast for southern California, the Willamette Valley in Oregon, along the Arkansas River, and western Colorado. Areas of moderate deficit include northern Minnesota and from Missouri to the Gulf. Surpluses are forecast for northern Nebraska, the Black Hills of South Dakota, southern Montana, the Pecos River in New Mexico into Texas, eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, northern Virginia, coastal North Carolina, and much of Florida from Jacksonville past Lake Kissimmee.

Many analyses reported in ISciences-authored blog posts are based on data generated by the ISciences Water Security Indicator Model (WSIM). WSIM is a validated capability that produces monthly reports on current and forecast global freshwater surpluses and deficits with lead times of 1-9 months at 0.25°x0.25° resolution.
