Southeast Asia & the Pacific: Water deficits to persist in Thailand, Malaysia; surpluses in Borneo, West Java

Water deficits in the region are forecast to persist with particular severity in Thailand and Malaysia through January 2017. Surpluses dominate the forecast for southern Borneo and West Java. Deficits are forecast on the island of Timor from June through October and may be widespread and exceptional July through September.

From April through June severe to exceptional water deficits are forecast in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Malay Peninsula, Brunei, the Philippines, and southern Papua New Guinea.

Exceptional water deficits will continue to affect many parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific through November 2016. March through May is forecast to be especially dry in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, the Malay Peninsula, and Mindanao. In contrast, severe to exceptional water surpluses are expected on Java which may persist for months.

Moderate to exceptional water deficits are forecast to persist in Thailand, Sumatra, eastern Borneo, the southern Philippines, and Papua New Guinea. Surpluses are forecast for western Borneo and Java.

Moderate to exceptional water deficits are forecast for many parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific through September 2016. Deficits are expected to be most persistent, widespread, and severe in Southeast Asia, Sumatra, eastern Borneo, the southern Philippines, and the island of New Guinea.
